When we retired to Bacalar, Mexico from the United States, we took so many things into consideration. I was working a job that gave me time to spend researching. Bacalar was thirty minutes from an international airport. We would be able to travel back to the US easily for holidays and visits with family. We had direct buses to Cancun where we could get flights to anywhere in the world. There was one caveat that we didn’t consider, couldn’t have possibly known. The world of 2022 is no longer the world of 2013.
Nine short years. How time flies. I’m not suggesting that we should not make plans because of an uncertain future. The future is always uncertain.

Sitting on my couch looking at travel search engines makes my head spin. Lisa said something his morning that is so true. “You should go. When you get home you’ll never want to do it again.” How right she is. I hate flying. Flights are long (there are fewer route options), expensive and involve crazy people. I also drop my cell phone and loose my headphones. The stress makes me crazy.

I will persist however. I miss my kids. Wish me luck.
DOS TORTAS
So true. Tho we hibernate and envy your winters with fond memories, our grandchildren are here in NY. When, if ever, we’ll fly again or take the Train. Un like our SUV whining friends, gas prices are not a trauma for us. A Prius was a smart move 4 years ago. Keep writing.

Aww thanks. The choices we make. Our kids all moved away from us and got busy busy lives. So we moved to Mexico!

I hear you . I just plucked up courage to fly from Canada to UK to see my Mum and my sister . I made myself ill over it all . Some of my worries came true i.e the airport craziness it was about as bad as it can be but once there I loved every minute didn’t watch the news the whole time ! returned feeling lighter in my head for having seen them in the flesh, hugged them and hung out for real.
I felt once I got going it was ok however the booking process has me seeking Ativan from GP ! I say go you won’t regret it at all good luck !

Glad you got through it ok. Lots of breathing and prayers. There’s nothing like a good hug around the neck.

Does your family ever visit you in Bacalar? When we lived in Belize and later Mexico, we had to do all the traveling back and forth for visits, as our parents were older and unable or unwilling to visit us (and we’re childless). We also dislike flying (especially since 9/11), so the travel back and forth was one of our main reasons for returning to the US. I would have loved if they could have visited us south of the border, but it just wasn’t possible. Best of luck with your trip and wishes for an uneventful flight — with no crazies aboard!

No family has visited, which is another thing we didn’t expect. Don’t get me started.
