This week I was at Physical Therapy of Texas, working through the exercises that I hope will restore my walking, balance and strength.

After a warm-up on the stationary bike, I proceeded to the ‘ladder’. The ladder consists of a row of ten-12 inch taped squares similar to the children’s game hop scotch. I moved through a series of – two steps forward, one step back, side steps, high knees, butt kicks etc. The moves seem simple but as I alternate feet and move briskly from block to block, my balance is definitely challenged but improving.

This week as I rested between sets, there was a woman nearby on a leg press machine. Up, down, pushing her weight while bending and extending her legs. In an effort to be friendly, I quipped, “what are you in for”?
In a resigned voice she replied “knees and ankles” and then followed up with something like, “I wish I could do what you’re doing”.
Her words surprised and encouraged me. I guess we’re all where we are on the strength and ability scale, creeping along, wishing we could do more.

Her kindness helped me to give myself some grace. I’m in it for the long haul and NOT overdoing it seems to be a lifelong lesson of mine.

Hey hey what have you got to say!
