Mexican Markets Make Me Happy

20 Apr

There’s nothing like a Saturday morning spent exploring a little neighborhood mercado. This particular one is a favorite of ours. There are plants blooming, music that makes you want to dance and many food vendors filling the air with their enticing aromas.

From top left, my MIL, a pineapple, bougainvillea and spicy habanero peppers.

One of my favorite things to do is to strike up a conversation with locals. They are so curious about us foreigners and when they find someone who can speak Spanish, the questions come pouring out, especially about current US politics.

My favorite tropical fruit, guanábana aka soursop. Creamy and delicious.
Sweet tamale with raisins.

Sampling this tamale brought happy tears to my eyes. Tamales in the tropics are made in banana leaves. These tamales were advertised as estilo de DF or made in the style of central Mexico, cooked in corn husks. They tasted exactly like the ones my Mexican mama made for me to celebrate my twenty-first birthday in 1973. It’s funny how a taste or smell can take you back.

No market day would be complete without a frenchie. This stunning brindle was a bruiser named Thor or in Spanish Tor.

An abundance of color. Papayas and limes.

My mobility is still limited but this was a great way to test my limitations, A really fun morning.

This post brought me right back to the vibrant mercados of Mexico. How I miss them! We normally rode our bikes and had to manage our way home with a large papaya, mangoes, and other delicacies in various bike bags and sometimes bags hanging off our handlebars. Such a fun, adventurous time that was.

Unfortunately this Mercado is too far away for me to access easily. That’s one thing that’s changes, much less public transportation. Glad I brought up some good memories.

The Laguna has been quite choppy due to the wind. Swim early in the day.

One of the many things I miss about Turkey is the weekly market. Always a treat!

Do you not have farmer’s markets where you are?

I love markets. My favorite was in Oaxaca about 50 years ago. But I also love the farmers markets in the US, though they’re fat different from those in Mexico.
Market day is today. Music, coffee, veggies, food, friends. A perfect Saturday morning.
I’m glad so many people want to talk about the US situation.
Years ago, we had a really awful governor here in Arizona. A friend of mine was in Peru, and someone asked where she was from. When she said Arizona, the woman responded, “Isn’t that where the crazy governor is?”
People know so much more about the US than we know about their countries.

I too love farmer’s markets. Poking around the stalls and finding fragrant loaves of bread. Mmmm
