The Tortas have taken on the challenge of finding the best chocolate in San Cristobal de las Casas. It’s a tough job but someone has to do it. The mountainous state of Chiapas, Mexico is known for its coffee and chocolate. The weather has turned chilly and rainy for us jungle girls. What better excuse than to drink our weight in chocolate!
While we loved San Cristobal, you can see how the narrow streets clogged with traffic and the stone sidewalks worn smooth from pedestrian’s feet have changed the city. Most visitors were Mexican, but we heard a lot of German spoken.
Mexico has so many beautiful towns, and we are eager to visit them all, at least as many as we can. They are called Magical Cities, and San Cristobal was indeed.

We were fortunate enough to visit San Cristobal de las Casas during a trip to Mexico when living in Belize. What a lovely city it was. We walked up a zillion stairs to one church that was very high up, with a great view of the city below. We also visited an orchid farm just north of the city that was fascinating, and got to hike on a trail near the farm that went up a mountain (or big hill!) and get another fine city view. I don’t remember having any chocolate there, though; definitely a mistake on our parts!

We had a different type of visit from what we usually do. My leg limited our walking. We did stop at the cemetery which was world class.

I visited Oaxaca in 1986. I met up with a friend there. She was coming north from Guatemala and I was heading south to Antigua.
We stayed a few days, and our last morning we roamed around looking for a good spot for breakfast and found a little place called Casa de Chocolate.
The hot chocolate laced with cinnamon was served in huge bowls! I felt like I should’ve moved there right then. Ah, hindsight.
