Living in the tropics makes us vulnerable to hurricanes, plain and simple. Over the years we have taken measures to ensure our safety and ability to ride out whatever Mother Nature throws at us.
After several years of mopping up water on our screened porch, we added hurricane shutters. Our biggest threat is wind. I imagined a branch flying through our screens. Yikes.

Since we are not on the ocean, there is no fear of storm surge. We have built drainage both outside and in. At some point we’d like to add solar as back up. The other option is a generator. In the nine years we have lived here, we’ve been very very lucky.
We finally got some wind and a downpour during the night. My wife slept through it all.

I hope this message reaches you…I have attempted to email prior to leaving for Bacalar and had no success (I have been having computer issues so am sure it was on my end!) – anyway, buenos dias! Bob and I are here in our place and enjoying this lovely morning of such calm. We have been here a couple of days and I have no idea where the time has gone: chet for supplies, cleaning our place, doing other errands…😊 We’re here until the first week in December. Bob’s son, Brian, and his wife are (finally!) coming to pehaltun for a visit on Wednesday – here for a week. We would love to see you three – say hello, catch up a bit and/or just enjoy a cold drink some afternoon. Possible? I hope you are all well – and yes, no hurricane damage (loved your blog, as always, Alex)😊
I attempted to get up to date on the dog issue (Sassy), but got unclear information from Marissa..sounded like the whole issue is still unsettled..? I, myself, have issues with that dog..We are open to hearing anything any of you would like us to know…

They have really come in handy. We close them whenever we leave no matter what the weather. Showers roll in out of nowhere.
