Let me introduce our little distraction from hurricanes, earthquakes and mass shootings, meet Frida aka Puppy Puppy. She is a dachshund mix. Every street dog in Mexico is a mix. You may remember that we lost ChaCha (A Díos ChaCha), a rescue dog that we adopted the month before our July vacation. Three days into our trip, we got the message that she had escaped our yard and was hit by a car and killed. Our hearts broke.
I had the thought that I would like another dog “someday”, a lap dog. Luna is a not snuggly two year old. She’s too big and just not interested.
Our friend Carla picked up a sad little abandoned puppy running the streets of Bacalar. Carla has a soft spot for dogs, hidden under her Dutch sensibilities. Unfortunately her already full house would allow no additional borders. Frida needed a foster or forever home fast.
It was hard to see what the dog looked like in pictures, except for a case of mange and large sores on a puppy butt. Carla had to go to Merida so we agreed to keep Frida for the weekend and see what Luna thought.
Poor Luna, she never stood a chance. We took one look at Frida and were goners. Luna voiced her objections by vomiting in every room, growling, lunging and generally looking dejected. She began protecting a bone she’d shown no interest in ever. Why did I think this was a good idea?
We made some changes to sleeping and eating arrangements and things calmed down. We are very naive and inexperienced dog moms.
Frida’s health is good, except for a few muscular ticks, head bobbing and foot twitching. She doesn’t seem to mind. The vet thinks she had distemper which caused nerve damage. She’s on vitamin B and fingers are crossed for complete recovery. We love her regardless. After treatment for mange, her coat is black and shiny. Her sores are all but healed. She comes running when I call her. Which is saying something for her short little legs. Even Luna has relaxed considerably. After a week and a half, we are looking like a slightly bigger family and I’ve gotten the snuggle dog I wanted.
DOS TORTAS
Awwww, Frida is adorable. Thank you for taking her in, getting her to a vet, and for falling in love with her…I’m quite sure the feeling is mutual. 🙂

Falling in love just seems to happen in Mexico. Street dogs are no exception.

For the neurological ticks you could try cbd oil. There have been good results with it in pets with neurological problems.
